The Dangers of Impacted Teeth

Wisdom teeth, or third molars, are the last permanent teeth to erupt and commonly appear between the ages of 17 and 25. For many patients, wisdom teeth will become impacted because there is not enough room in the mouth for them to erupt correctly. If this happens, tooth pain, swelling, and infection can occur, increasing the risk for more serious oral health concerns. We offer wisdom teeth extractions as part of our patients’ preventive care to ensure the health of their mouth and that no other permanent teeth become damaged. Our wisdom teeth extraction completed in our office are out-patient procedures, meaning you can return home the same day as your appointment. Our experienced dentists have completed hundreds of wisdom teeth extraction procedures and are skilled at handling a wide range of complexities and emergencies associated with impacted teeth. If you or your child is experiencing symptoms common with impacted teeth, we recommend that you schedule an appointment with our office and learn about what to expect with wisdom teeth extraction.

What to Expect with Our Wisdom Teeth Extraction

Wisdom teeth extraction is a preventive procedure to keep your mouth healthy and protect your existing teeth. Guided by our skilled and careful team, our patients rarely experience any complications during their wisdom teeth extraction procedure. We provide all instructions before your appointment, and on the day of surgery, we fully numb the treatment site(s) with local anesthetic. If you need additional sedation, we offer multiple options to ensure you are at the optimal level of relaxation and comfort. During your surgery, we carefully extract the molars, then clean the site of any bone or tooth debris. After sterilizing the area, we suture the gums and place gauze over the site to help a healthy blood clot form. You will experience some swelling and bruising at the site for the next few days, but your mouth will heal generally within a few weeks after wisdom teeth extraction. Our team will provide follow-up care as needed and assist you with any questions or concerns you may have during your recovery.
